Touriga Franca
Also known as Touriga Francesa
Touriga Franca is a Portuguese black grape with a central role in the Douro, where it contributes to both dry reds and Port. The Douro authority describes regional wines with intense colour, blackberry and floral notes, dense body and firm but polished structure. It is often blended with Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, so the variety is frequently encountered as part of a regional composition.

Climate and Winemaking
Grown across Portuguese regions. Site choice in the Douro must account for altitude, slope, exposure, soil fertility, heat, wind, water and maturity; no generalized climate tolerance is claimed.
IVDP describes regular production and good disease resistance in Douro, with medium-to-large clusters and medium rounded berries. Regional parcel conditions vary greatly; these traits should not be generalized to every site.
Used in dry Douro blends and Port. IVDP specifically names blend affinity with Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz. Port production context is regional and multi-varietal; no fixed grape-specific method is asserted.
Food Pairings
- Grilled or braised red meat with a young dry Douro red (editorial suggestion)
- Roast meat with a structured Douro blend (editorial suggestion)
- Pair Port according to its sweetness and style (editorial suggestion)
Ageing Potential
- Douro regulator states its medium/large clusters and berries contribute tannin concentration and to the ageing capacity of blends in which it participates. This is regional blend potential, not a guaranteed ageing duration for every wine.
