Joanne, SommWine's wine and beer educator, with a flight of beers.

Go beyond “I like this beer.”

Understand what makes beers taste different. Recognize styles, describe what you taste and make more informed choices — whether you're ordering for yourself or recommending a beer to a guest.

Understand the ingredients

Connect malt, hops and yeast with the character in your glass.

Taste with purpose

Pay attention to aroma, flavour and texture, rather than relying on a label or a familiar style name.

YOUR STARTING POINT

WSET Level 1 Award in Beer

A beginner-level qualification covering beer production, key styles, tasting, storage, service and food pairing. No previous beer knowledge is required.

The WSET assessment is a closed-book exam: 30 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes.

Ask Joanne about current availability, online beer course options, fees and what's included. We'll help you understand the next step before you enrol.
