Touriga Nacional

Also known as Touriga, Touriga Fina, Tourigão, Tourigo Antigo, Tourigo do Dão

Touriga Nacional is a low-yielding Portuguese red grape valued for intense colour, expressive aromas and structure. It is an important variety in both Dão and the Douro, where it contributes to dry table wines as well as Port. Its small bunches and thick-skinned berries can build colour and aroma precursors, while WSET describes typical wines as high in acidity and tannin. In the vineyard, its performance must be matched to the parcel: altitude, exposure, water and maturity vary widely across the Douro.

Typical bodyCan contribute depth and volume to a red wine, according to IVDP. The body of a finished wine depends on site, yield, blending and winemaking; no fixed body level is asserted for all Touriga Nacional.

Typical tannin: WSET describes Touriga Nacional as having high tannin. IVDP documents thick skins and anthocyanin-rich berries; extraction and wine style affect the finished tannin impression.

Climate and Winemaking

Touriga Nacional is cultivated across Portugal’s varied conditions. WSET says it performs well in warm, relatively dry climates, but the Douro regulator emphasizes matching each cultivar to parcel-specific altitude, slope, exposure, soil, water and maturation conditions; avoid treating drought response or climate suitability as universal.

Low productivity is repeatedly documented: the bunches are numerous but small, berries have thick skins and may accumulate sugar and aroma precursors. These traits can yield deeply coloured, aromatic grapes but low yield is not a guarantee of quality. The Douro regulator notes that parcel conditions differ substantially and variety choice should consider vigor, heat, wind, disease, ripening and yield.

Used in dry still red wines and Port blends. It may be made as a varietal wine or blended; in Port, it contributes to a multi-variety regional tradition. IVDP says wines made or blended with it can be aromatic, balanced and age-capable. Fermentation, extraction, oak and assemblage remain producer choices rather than fixed variety rules.

Ageing Potential

  • Some regional wines made from or blended with Touriga Nacional have ageing potential according to the Douro and Dão authorities. This is a potential of suitable wines, not a universal drinking window.
