Auxerrois

SOMMWINE GRAPE LIBRARY

Auxerrois

Also known as Auxerrois blanc (registered synonym in Germany), Pinot Auxerrois (registered synonym in Germany)

Auxerrois is a white grape with a quieter, rounder profile than the briskest northern European whites. It is established in Alsace and Luxembourg, where official regional descriptions emphasize fruit, aromatic breadth and a softer feel. Its name is easy to misread: Auxerrois is a distinct cultivar, related to Chardonnay through shared Pinot and Gouais Blanc parentage, not another name for Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc.

ClassificationVitis vinifera
Typical bodyLuxembourg’s official wine description groups Auxerrois with rounder, more aromatic wines, and its cultivar profile describes the style as mellow. This is a comparative regional impression rather than a fixed body score.
Typical acidityPlantgrape describes Auxerrois wines as not very acidic. Luxembourg’s official wine authority characterizes its regional examples as fresh with delicate acidity. The profile therefore describes typical regional wines as soft to moderate in perceived acidity, without an analytical range.

Aromas and Flavours

  • Luxembourg’s official wine authority lists melon, mirabelle plum, citrus, floral notes, exotic fruit, quince and honey (particularly in top-level oak-matured examples). Plantgrape describes the wines as slightly aromatic. These are regional or style examples, not guaranteed cultivar markers.

Climate and Winemaking

Plantgrape describes the cultivar as well suited to northern areas and limestone terroirs. It records budburst nine days after Chasselas and early-season maturity about one and a half weeks after Chasselas at the reference site. Those comparisons are catalogue phenology data, not universal calendar dates.

Plantgrape describes Auxerrois as moderately vigorous, with low fertility under short pruning, small bunches and berries, and susceptibility to grape moths, downy mildew, grey rot, particularly powdery mildew. Risk varies with site, season, clone and management. Two certified French clones are listed (56 and 57); a conservatory of over 200 clones was planted in Alsace in 2007.

The official Luxembourg wine authority documents diverse, gastronomic still-wine styles and notes that honeyed character can occur in top wines matured in oak. Oak maturation is not universal. No single fermentation, blending or maturation method is asserted as intrinsic to the grape.

Food Pairings

  • Editorial suggestion: smoked Luxembourg specialties with a soft, fruit-forward Auxerrois; this pairing is specifically recommended by Luxembourg’s official wine authority.
  • Editorial suggestion: poultry, mild pork dishes or mushroom-based dishes where the wine’s weight and seasoning suit the preparation; these are SommWine menu suggestions, not cultivar facts.

Ageing Potential

  • Ageing potential is style- and bottle-dependent. Luxembourg’s official wine authority says some examples can develop as cellar-worthy wines; no cultivar-wide ageing window is asserted.

Test Your Knowledge

  1. How can Auxerrois be a full sibling of Chardonnay yet remain a distinct grape with a different typical regional style?
  2. What is the difference between a historical synonym in a germplasm database and an officially recognized synonym?
  3. Why should the aromatic and acidity descriptions from Luxembourg be treated as regional examples rather than universal guarantees?
