Arinto
Also known as Pedernã (Vinho Verde; same cultivar)
Arinto is a Portuguese white grape known for retaining freshness as it ripens. It is prominent in Bucelas and appears widely across Portugal; in Vinho Verde the same cultivar is called Pedernã. Its naturally high acidity supports crisp dry whites, blends and sparkling wines. Arinto dos Açores is a separately catalogued Azorean variety and should not be confused with mainland Arinto.

Climate and Winemaking
Late ripening and described as retaining freshness in hot conditions; grown in differing Portuguese climates. Do not infer uniform heat or drought performance.
The INIAV technical sheet records late phenology, vigorous erect growth, low production despite large clusters, sensitivity to rot and a moisture requirement; source cautions that high acidity is an enological aptitude, not immunity to climate variation.
Made as a dry still white, in blends, and as sparkling wine; ViniPortugal says its acidity benefits blends and sparkling wine. No particular fermentation or oak method is treated as defining.
Food Pairings
- Shellfish or grilled white fish with a crisp Arinto (editorial recommendation)
- Fresh goat cheese with Bucelas-style white wine (editorial recommendation)
- Aperitif or light vegetable dishes with sparkling Arinto (editorial recommendation)
Ageing Potential
- INIAV and regional descriptions report capacity for aromatic development over several years in suitable wines; not every bottling is intended for extended ageing.
