Level 1 suits complete beginners, wine enthusiasts who want the fundamentals and hospitality staff building foundational knowledge. It's also a good choice if you'd prefer a gentler introduction or have limited study time.
You do not need Level 1 before Level 2. Level 1 gives you a valuable foundation. If you already enjoy wine and want substantially more depth, Level 2 is another starting point.

A welcoming start with Joanne.
Joanne is a WSET Diploma graduate, certified WSET wine educator and sommelier, with more than 15 years' wine and hospitality experience. She has taught WSET in Whistler since 2018.
You don't need to arrive knowing the vocabulary. Start with what you notice, ask questions and build your understanding one step at a time.

Assessment is a closed-book examination with 30 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. The pass mark is 70%. There is no practical tasting exam.
Exam arrangements are confirmed with the course schedule. On passing, you receive the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines.

Do I need wine knowledge?
No prior wine knowledge is required. Level 1 is designed as an introduction.
When does the next class run?
A minimum of 8 students is required. Course dates and venue are confirmed based on enrolment; there are currently no confirmed dates.
Do I need Level 1 before Level 2?
No. Choose the level that suits your experience, goals and available study time.
